Dog owners in Plymouth are being invited to explore the National Trust estate at Cotehele by catching one of two “Calstock Rover” trains from Plymouth to Calstock this Sunday, 19 March.

The Calstock Rover will be part of the regular Tamar Valley Line service leaving Plymouth station at 09 20 and 11 06 on Sunday morning. Passengers who bring their dogs on one of these two trains will get a free doggy and human gift bag (in return for a donation to Guide Dogs) and the chance to win a pair of tickets anywhere on the Great Western Railway network.

Once in Calstock, passengers can follow the easy waymarked walk to the Cotehele estate from the station (get directions in our free PDF leaflet) and enjoy the wealth of walks available to dogs and humans on the estate before catching the train back again.

Matt Fearn, Duty Station Manager for Great Western Railway at Plymouth station said:

“For the last two years, we at Plymouth station have been fundraising to sponsor two guide dogs and thought that an event for dog owners in Plymouth would be a nice way to raise a bit more money for this, as well as promoting the scenic Tamar Valley Line and Cotehele.”

Rebecca Catterall from the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership, who is helping to promote the event said:

“Cotehele is a great day trip destination from Plymouth with an easy walk from Calstock station and spectacular views from the train. The Calstock Rover train is a good excuse to get out into the countryside and explore the Tamar Valley with your dog and support a great charity at the same time.”

An adult Off-Peak Day Return from Plymouth to Calstock is £5.80. Dogs travel free, a maximum of two per person. Children aged 5-15 years are half price, under 5s go free. Train times and fares can be found on the Great Western Railway website.

Dogs are allowed on the wider Cotehele estate but not in the formal gardens. Refreshments and toilets are available at Cotehele Quay.
